Introduction

Glutathione S-transferase is an antioxidant enzyme, which is often used to be expressed as a tag to separate and purify recombinant proteins by affinity chromatography via its high affinity for glutathione.

Description

Glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) form a family of eukaryotic and prokaryotic metabolic enzymes known for their ability to catalyze the conjugation of the reduced form of glutathione (GSH) to various substrates for the purpose of detoxification. It belongs to a major group of detoxification enzymes able to detoxify a wide range of dangerous compounds, such as carcinogens, therapeutic drugs and products of oxidative stress. GST may also bind toxins and function as a transport protein. It is often used as a tag for recombinant protein expression and purification. The tag is 220 amino acids (about 26 KDa) in size and contributes to protein solubility.
