Genetically modified nontoxic form of Clostridium perfringens toxin beta-2. Produced as toxoid with identical antigenic response as wild-type toxin in E. coli as recombinant GST-fusion protein.
Clostridium perfringens beta toxin is a necrotizing agent and it induces hypertension by release of catecholamine. It is produced by Clostridium perfringens Type B and Type C strains. Beta toxin is susceptible to proteolytic cleavage particularly by trypsin, and is therefore highly lethal to infant mammals due to trypsin inhibitors presence in the colostrum.
